Best Insulated Waders

Last Updated on

Insulated waders are an absolute must for most fly fisherman and duck hunters. Whether it’s because it’s 32 degrees outside, or the water feels like it’s 32 degrees from runoff. It can be tough to sort through all of the variables that waders come in, and then try to find out just how much insulation is actually available. My guide will help you find the best insulated waders for any type of fishing or hunting you’ll be doing.

Insulated Chest Waders For Duck Hunting

I already wrote an in-depth guide on the best duck hunting waders, so feel free to check out that guide for my recommendations that range from a super high budget, down to a low budget. This guide about the best insulated waders will go more in-depth about the different levels of Thinsulate, which help keep you from becoming an ice cube. The higher gram weight of Thinsulate, the more insulated it keeps you.

2000 grams of Thinsulate

If you’re looking to duck hunt or fish in some of the coldest climates, you’re going to need some serious insulation. That’s where the Guide Gear Men’s Insulated Hunting 2000g Chest Waders come in. With a 2000g level of Thinsulate, you’re ready to go to the Artic Circle and stay warm!

Besides an extreme level of insulation, you’ll also have a fleece hand warming pocket and a shotgun shell pocket for added convenience. There is an abrasion resistant coating to help protect your waders from damage, and the knees are padded for extra comfort when kneeling. You’ll look stylish in your Guide Gear insulated chest wader since it comes with Realtree MAX-5 camo.

1600 grams of Thinsulate

The Cabela branded Supermag Hunting Chest Waders offer significant insulation and something most other brands don’t have – a store presence where you can talk to customer service in person if you have an issue. That piece of mind definitely adds value to your purchase. Additionally, they offer multiple sizes so you can find the perfect fit, regardless if you’re tall, stout, or slender.

If you’re looking for additional options in the 1600g Thinsulate range, check out the Banded RedZone Breathable Insulated Wader on Amazon.com. With added knee protection using 900D fabric, you can be confident they’ll hold up in rough conditions. You can find the right fit for you using their side zip adjustments too.

1200 grams of Thinsulate

If you’re looking for one of the most insulated chest waders, the Frogg Toggs Bull Togg is the chest wader for you. At 1200 grams of Thinsulate in the boots, your feet will stay comfortable even in the coldest of waters. It even includes 8mm of wool at the midsole for extra insulation. This is definitely one of the best waders for cold weather. Add in a pair of camo insulated socks and your feet won’t even know it’s freezing outside.

A nice added benefit is the Bull Togg has a fleece lined hand warmer pocket. An added bonus for duck hunters is the 10 count shell holder built in, freeing up pockets. With the amounts of insulation and options, I highly recommend the Bull Togg as one of the best insulated chest waders for duck hunting.

600 grams of Thinsulate

Not everyone needs the most insulation available, but still want something that will still keep you warm. Frogg Toggs has you covered here too! With their 600 grams of Thinsulate Amphib Camo Bootfoot Wader, you’ll get a slightly thinner upper chest, but a still well insulated boot. The Amphib is great for days that start off bitter cold, but warm up significantly through the morning.

The Amphibs are significantly cheaper than the Bull Togg, but you do lose the 10 shotgun shell holders on the chest. These are a great choice for the price and a recommended purchase for cold water hunting.

If you’re looking for a pair on the cheaper side, but still highly rated, the TideWe Cleated Neoprene Bootfoot Wader was designed for you. It’s currently the #1 best seller on Amazon for its category, and comes in a wide range of sizes, so give them a shot! You can have them at your doorstep next day as well using Amazon Prime, click here for a free 30 day trial.

200 gram Thinsulate

If you’re shopping for a light pair of waders with a minor amount of Thinsulate, then I recommend checking out the Hodgman Caster wader. Hodgman is a known name in the industry, and while this isn’t the most flattering of colors, I don’t think the fish or wildlife will judge you.

Insulated Chest Waders For Fly Fishing

Best Insulated Hip Waders

You might have noticed that there aren’t too many insulated hip waders available. Even if you do search for them, often times you’ll end up with a bunch of search results for “non-insulated” hip waders! Very frustrating, and I feel your pain. Thankfully, I’ve got a handful of the best insulated hip waders right here for you to take a look at.

600 gram Thinsulate

Duck Commander has made a nice looking pair of hip waders that offer great insulation for hip waders. These are perfect for those days where the sun is nice and warm, but the water is still frigid. As you probably already know, hip waders are significantly faster to put on and take off, making your fishing trips more about the fun.

Foam Insulation

If you don’t want to mess with the fancy Thinsulate and are looking for some basic insulation, I recommend looking at the Ranger Bullhead Heavy Duty Rubber boots. They come with a steel toe for extra protection and are easy to slip on. When you’re done with them, just throw them in the back of your truck! These are great for fast trips.
